Air Washers treated with ozone operate more cleanly and more efficiently than those treated with conventional non-oxidizing biocides. Operators frequently comment that “the screens stayed much cleaner than the other” non-ozone treated air washers and, “that the bacteria levels were not measurable” in the air washers that used ozone, which is to say that the bacteria levels were very low. Bacteria levels in non-ozone treated air washers often reach as high as 100,000 organisms per milliliter even in the presence of traditional chemical treatment.

Air washers that employ ozone treatment are also much easier to clean. On one Finnegan-Reztek installation an operator remarked that, “one man cleaned the ozone-treated air washer in 2 hours while it took 2 to 3 men 8 hours to clean the chemically treated air washer.” Shorter cleaning time translates into lower labor costs.

Since ozone reduces bacteria levels and minimizes bio-film on both the cooling water side and on the chilled water side, chillers operate with greater efficiency yielding additional savings. This increased efficiency occurs, in part, because the chiller heat transfer surface retains target heat transfer for a longer period of time than it does with conventional non-oxidizing biocides.
